Papel Picado is made by stacking thin sheets of tissue paper and then (using stencils with a chisel and hammer) punching out intricate designs into the paper and separating each sheet to either be used in a banner or as table decor. It is a traditional art form in México and designs can vary widely depending on the occasion. This set of 5 different designs and colors depicts scenes relating to Dia de los Muertos. They can be placed on or hung around the altar or simply used as placemats for your Day of the Dead celebration. The tissue paper is fragile and will tear over time, but that's part of the meaning behind papel picado... a reminder of how precious life is.
